Related: About this forumThe carpet is GONE!!
The kids wouldn't let me do much. I guess they figured I contributed enough by tearing out the bedroom hallway carpet.
The rooms look SO much bigger. There's still a LOT of work to do but I'm in no big hurry. Meanwhile, the kidcats are beyond confused.
I'm exhausted and plan on going to bed very early. Tomorrow I start looking for some suitable area rugs.

(23,988 posts)Congratulations. I had hardwood underneath the carpets when I bought my house. The carpets were the first thing to go. Its impossible to keep them clean with kids and pets.
For what its worth, I bought ruggable rugs and pads. The rugs come up and can be thrown in the washer and the dryer. I LOVE them. I have an 8x10 in the living room among some others
it washes and dries perfectly.
Enjoy those floors!

(34,500 posts)We tore out our carpeting and went with an 8x10 area rug after my last child was through crawling and I love it. Its so much easier to keep clean with a swiffer or vacuum. Dog hair comes right up. Ill never get wall to wall carpet again ever!

(92,369 posts)Those floors will be really nice when they are done. The cats will discover the value of this change in the coming days, should be fun!
Area rugs and scatter rugs are all I have except in the bedroom, the rest is a fairly neutral beige slate-like linoleum. But it was new/unused when I moved in.
Some changes are fun, redoing the floors has lots of options to explore.

(92,369 posts)That toys and potential toys skittle across the floor with greater speed and clatter it can get really interesting. They may get into group sports at that point!

(25,816 posts)We picked up a reasonably priced rug at Ikea last week. We looked there forever and finally found one we really like!

(298 posts)When I was a kid and we got rid of the carpet my breathing got 100 times better.
I think wall to wall carpet needs to be filed under avocado-coloured stoves, brown wood panelling, and drop ceilings. A tacky, ugly thing of the past.

(17,550 posts)You only have to pull up wall to wall carpet once to realize how much dirt gets trapped under it. Ill never have it in a house again.

(4,237 posts)I love hardwood floors... for the reasons you mentioned and more.
I have a horrible carpet in the front room of my house. It was there when we bought the house, and we'd planned to replace it. Well, money being extremely short, I decided the carpet is going to get ripped out and it's back to the natural hardwood floor underneath. I hope to have my project finished by Xmas. Hope it turns out as well as yours!

(203 posts)Homemade Wood Floor Polish
2 tablespoons of olive oil
1 tablespoon of distilled white vinegar
15 drops lemon or lemongrass essential oil ( optional)
2 cups of warm water
I put into a spray bottle and use a microfiber mop, but any old mop will do. Shake bottle often.

(27,255 posts)When the floor was originally installed, they didn't bother protecting it when the walls and ceilings were painted. Maybe because they knew it would be carpeted over. That's my best guess. There are paint splatters and blotches everywhere.
There is a LOT of work to be done, yet. We are going to have to sand it and then put a clear finish down. I want the natural variations of wood color to show through instead of varnishing it all to a solid, darker finish.
All of that can wait until Spring so that we can have the windows open. Meanwhile I'll get it cleaned up.

(30,308 posts)Personally, I hate wall to wall carpeting. Hardwood floors are nicer and easier to clean.
Congratulations!!

(7,183 posts)Several years ago one of my customers bought a house & hired me to remove the carpet in the living/dining rooms & underneath was a beautiful mahogany floor. The original owner must have put the carpet down right away because the floor didn't have any wear. And it was solid MAHOGANY! It would cost an arm & a leg to install that floor today.

Those poor babies, so much change, in such a short time. They're smart and full of tricks they'll figure it out in no time. Someone, once told me that cats are bothered by changes in their environment. If you don't change things too often they will get used to it.
You deserve a hot bath and a good night's sleep.
