In an effort to keep fresh baked bread fresh longer I tried this novel appoach.
The plastic wrap that I loosly covered the loaf with for its final rise was left on
for baking.... Not the greenish line. oops. To get full coverage of the plastic I will wrap the whole loaf
before baking next time.....

(26,107 posts)Is essential for extending self life. Put the bread in a bag and use a straw to suck the air out of the bag.
Also, handle the bread with disposable gloves, not bare hands, even if they have been washed just prior. Bread, especially fresh bread, is a perfect growing medium for microbes that are responsible for spoilage.
You can also freeze bread and depending on the type and what you plan to use it for. Its a great way to extend shelf life.
I separate the loaves that are presliced into batches of four to six slices. Then, I use twist tie bags to rebag the portions. I remove the air with a straw, put the small batch bags into a larger zip closure bag, and freeze them. You can reuse the bags if you don't get them dirty. Use gloves.
I use disposable vinyl gloves for almost all of my food handling for a variety of reasons with a few exceptions.
Whole loaves will freeze, but portions are better for the flexibility of use that they provide.
Happy Baking!

(5,107 posts)I simply forgot to pull the cover off before baking.
Bread doesn't live long enough here for me to worry about longevity.
I usually get half loaves at the bakeries near by, 6 of them.

(5,107 posts)I thought it was self evident.
I hope from my example others won't do the same.
When I did it it took me a while to figure out what I had done.
I had never seen a green ring around my bread before.....

(26,107 posts)It's important to me to do good and be helpful. I'm trying my best to do that. Your kind words mean a lot.
I'm especially sensitive now since my Chi Chi died and my Pomeranian, Butterbean unexpectedly died four days later. I'm having trouble coping right now to be honest.
I told myself that I was going to try and not cry today but here I go. Sorry.
Thanks again for being nice to me.

(16,581 posts)Full of gloom and doom and heartache. I can't make myself not feel it! Pet deaths. Family member death. Family members in the hospital facing death. I almost ran away, divorced, drove into a wall, burned something down because I can't NOT feel it! And I'm sensitive right now too.

(19,623 posts)When I make a loaf of bread, I lay a piece of waxed paper on the counter and flour that. Most of the flour stays on the paper or goes in the bread. When I put the bread in the pan, I cut a piece of the waxed paper from the piece I use and spray or brush the bottom, then use it to cover the loaf to rise. Not only getting maximum use of the paper, but It protects the crust and It doesn't disappear.
