1. Very interesting topic

Another thing which of interest to me is the law, and what defines mental illness in the commission of a crime.
You can be crazy as a hoot and still intellectually on some level know right from wrong. But is that the point? No it is about the thought disorder that allowed the thinking errors and lead to the conduct disorder. When a person does something this wrong they have to be crazy and in that way too far gone to be responsible for their actions.
It isn't just knowing right from wrong. There have to be delusions and a thought disorder, personality deficits, family dysfunction, emotional detachment, who knows maybe schizophrenia with voices? It is rare for most seriously mentally ill people to be violent. I think the violence is turned inward and felt as depression and hopelessness.
I have the same interest in justice for the segment of the criminal population with subgeneticly endowed IQ's . I think low IQ should rate special protection from the death penalty.
Same with combinations of mental or emotional illness and retardation.

2. I think it's important to have some notion of research on this topic

Sooner or later we all end up having our buttons pushed when some mentally well person makes a statement about the dangers of THOSE mentally ill that slips through our armor.

Knowing the best truth available can help us see their ignorant statements as ignorant. That takes some of the sting out of their stupidity, and it may reduce our need for an aggressive defense that will make matters worse.

I have my own problems but loved studying psychology and I worked in two State Hospitals and a couple of private institutions. Providing access to care without stigma is very important. Education of the general public about mental illness and how to get help for yourself or a loved one without getting law enforcement involved, is important.

5. You know what, I honestly think "mentally well" people are few and far between.

Most of the population has some mental health issue, ranging from ADHD to substance abuse to whatever.

Maybe they need it pointed out to them that we all have our quirks and problems.

Can you tell I'm a little pissed by some of the comments in GD?

Considering that only a fraction get to treatment for one reason or another, that
leaves many millions of people wandering around faking being mentally well.

It's really probably not me, but I have encountered most of them as co-workers and people sharing the highways I drive on. The epidemic must surely be centered on SE Wisconsin!

3. Good post

One thing that I worry about on a daily basis is, is something going to happen to my son? He has been beaten up several times by the kids in the neighborhood because he is differant. Sadly he isnt allowed out to play anymore without one of us. This is followed by a close secondary worry, has he hurt somebody? He has in the past hurt two kids, one was picking on him, the other he thought was picking on him, but wasnt. Its just the way he percieved it.

About being concerned for your son. It hurts a parent to see them suffer. Just one decent friend could make his life happier. I was the kind of kid who just had to find a friend to play with.
