Just finished "Empire of Light". Amazing.
Just an absolutely beautiful film. Olivia Coleman was tremendous, as usual. What an excellent film. Don't miss it!

(13,127 posts)Coleman gives a fine performance, and the cinematography was great, but considering the title, I thought this was going to be a paean to the movie theatre experience. It seemed like it was trying for that but never quite got there.

(32,262 posts)Colin Firth playing an old perv was quite the shock. I loved the scenes running the projection equipment.
The interior art deco theatre itself was gorgeous. Couldn't you just imagine the old ballroom in the '30's--pre-war--on a night of dancing? Not the clothing of the dance classes, but the dresses and elegant suits of those days?
The contrast between reality and imagination, past and present was handled with such finesse. The choice of films juxtaposed with the racial violence of the current day gave another layer of conflict and history to the story line.
It was quite a memorable film.
