"The Peripheral" on Amazon Prime Video

I haven't watched the whole series yet, only on episode 2, but I'm really impressed with this slick adaptation of a William Gibson novel. The writing, plotting, performances are very good, the characters are engaging, and the visual effects are top-notch. I was wary of it because I thought it might be just a flashy, confusing mess like a lot of cyberpunk movies but the storytelling is solid, feeding the viewer enough exposition in dribs and drabs to avoid tiresome info dumps but still keeping you on solid-enough footing to follow along. Set in 2032, the story follows a young woman (Chloë Grace Moretz) who is caring for her ailing mother in their rural home and helping out her ex-military brother make money by beta-testing a new sim because she's a wiz at videogaming. Of course, the situation is far more complicated than that, even more than I understand it this point, but I'm enjoying the ride.

on edit: After episode 2 ended, there was no 3. I hadn't been aware that new episodes are available on Fridays, just like Amazon did with The Rings of Power. So if you're the type that likes to binge-watch, it may be a few weeks.

So glad you wrote about it. It’s very good (although I prefer when all episodes drop at once).
