Tom Hardy stars as James Delaney, an infamous adventurer who returns to London from Africa in 1814 after the death of his father to claim his inheritance, a strip of land in the Pacific Northwest called the Nootka Sound that is of critical importance to determining the border between Canada and the young American nation as the Treaty of Ghent, to end the War of 1812, is being negotiated in secret. To secure his birthright, he must outmaneuver three powerful interests: the dissipated British Crown, the evil East India Company, and ruthless American spies.
The series is a gritty, grungy, sometimes gory look at Regency England, where the poor live in squalor and the wealthy commit crimes with impunity and entertain themselves with lavish parties that devolve into orgies by dawn. Every person and surface is covered in either grime or blood or both. Mixed in with the high-stakes political intrigue, brutal historical detail, forbidden passion, and chemistry lessons are teasing intimations of the supernatural.
Hardy is great as the anti-hero but the most watchable performance is Jonathan Pryce as chairman of the East India Company, as mad, conniving and morally bankrupt as any number of powerful people today.
