Last week, Stanley tweeted out a missive echoing anti-trans talking points and misinformation suggesting that young children who identify as trans are participating in a dangerous fad and criticizing parents who affirm their childrens gender identity. Snider retweeted the statement, saying, There was a time where I felt pretty too. Glad my parents didnt jump to any rash conclusions!
Both rock stars comments perpetuate the current moral panic around transgender youth that has led to Republican efforts to ban gender-affirming care for young people in states across the country.
...In a statement, San Francisco Pride noted Sniders longtime support for LGBTQ+ rights. However, when we were notified about the tweet in which Dee expressed support for Kisss Paul Stanleys transphobic statement, we were heartbroken and angry, the statement said. The message perpetuated by that tweet casts doubt on young trans peoples ability to self-identify their gender.

I also dont understand how anyone gets private medical information about people. Dont doctors take oaths?

(33,643 posts)In many cases at 10-12 years old. We normally wouldn't trust a 10-12 yo to decide diddly-squat. Imagine arguing 10 yo is old enough to decide to have sex, for example.
AGAIN, NOT SAYING I think this way, but that's underlying 'argument' these people are making. They're tender babes, they haven't developed enough to decide, they may change their feeling about it if they go through puberty matching their biological sex, etc.
I have to admit though that PRIOR to being educated by others, esp. here on DU over the past few years, I might've given that argument some credence, but it wouldn't have been out of trans-phobic views, at all.
Very unlike the assholes at the forefront of the CON side, who ALSO want to keep kids from drag-queen story hour, refuse to allow kids to even be educated about the phenomenon, don't want trans people to use the bathrooms they feel are proper, etc. That shit absolutely gives away what it's really all about for them. The kid-angle is mostly a front for their bigotry.
Thru being educated, I've come to understand that the major medical organizations support this kind of treatment, that there are considerable and thoughtful medical protocols that are followed in all cases, and that very very few people ever decide to transition back or later feel that they wish they hadn't been allowed to go through with the choices they made with their parents when they were young.
So what you say is the key point, and it helped advance gay rights considerably in the past. This is who they are, it's not a 'choice', and not a 'fad'.

(7,085 posts)For example the WPATH criteria for commencement of gender affirming hormone therapy (aged 16+) are as follows:
- Persistent, well-documented gender incongruence (sometimes referred to as gender dysphoria);
- Capacity to make a fully informed decision and to consent for treatment;
- Age of majority in a given country
- If significant medical or mental health concerns are present, they must be reasonably well-controlled.
Welcome to DU tho!

(191 posts)Very similar to what Jon Stewart laid out to that politician he buried a few months back. And I agree with all that.

(3,613 posts)They use any LGBT positive publication found anywhere near kids as "proof" this is all a plot. The Reichwing also likes to push the sports thing, as one right leaning person has done quite well in college women's swimming last year, with little indication that they are actually transitioning. So it has basically become a hands off topic unless you or some one you know is impacted in any way it is best to not speak about other people's issues.

(33,643 posts)He needs education on the T part.
I hope he gets it and changes his tune.
Stanley is also a liberal dude. I hope the same for him.
The Right is great at promoting their bullshit and leaving out important facts, and people are more malleable to propaganda than most of us want to admit.
