UN expert is 'deeply alarmed' by US state actions to erode LGBTQ+ rights

Equality is still “not within reach” for LGBTQ+ Americans despite more than five decades of progress, a United Nations expert said Tuesday.

Often, equality is “not even in sight,” Victor Madrigal-Borloz, the organization’s independent expert on violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, said Tuesday following a 10-day tour of Washington, Birmingham, Alabama, Miami and San Diego.

Madrigal-Borloz, a Costa Rican lawyer and human rights advocate, said he met with more than 70 federal, state and local representatives and more than 100 people with “lived experience” in the LGBTQ+ community.

Overwhelmingly, he said, LGBTQ+ people – particularly LGBTQ+ people of color – reported facing significant inequality in health care, education, employment and housing. LGBTQ+ individuals also reported being disproportionately impacted by violence.

I know as the younger generations are coming up into power, they’ll be more in favor of LGBTQI rights, but until then, it’s going to be a rough ride. I feel so sorry for what you’re going through.
If I have any advice, vote, Vote, VOTE.

I'm in fear nearly every moment. The nonstop hate and threats and targeting of my rights has disrupted my life and eroded my mental health. I can't go one day anymore without seeing people like me targeted in the media, or targeted by jackbooted MAGA thugs in office. I live in fear of people like Twitter Troll Greene getting their way and cutting off my healthcare (at which point I become part of DU's "In Memoriam" page). Those five decades of progress? We have an entire "political party" devoting every moment of their lives to trying to take back that progress, and even more.

I can only speak first-hand of the nightmare 2022 has been and the toll it's taken on me. I'll risk going out on a limb, though, and saying it's done the same kind of damage to many others.

Equality? I'm rapidly losing hope that I'll see equality in my lifetime.

So I guess my question is: Are you going to do anything about it? Or just express that you're concerned - errr, alarmed?

I mean, I'm sorry if that sounds rude... But how far is this shit going to be allowed to go?
