Netanyahu Has Been Kept in Power by the Hatred He Created

By Nehemia Shtrasler
Oct 15, 2024

How is it possible that after such a terrible year, Benjamin Netanyahu is still in power? How is it possible that after the massacre for which he is responsible, the 1,698 people murdered or killed in combat and the deep nadir to which he has brought us, not only hasn't he been kicked out of office, but he has grown even stronger thanks to Gideon Sa'ar joining his government? It looks like he'll survive as prime minister until the next scheduled election – or perhaps even longer.

He is the worst, most neglectful, most irresponsible prime minister we have had since the state was founded. His failures stem from two key traits: cowardice and procrastination. He is incapable of making decisions. He always postpones difficult decisions and waits for a miracle. Maybe something will happen and the problem will evaporate. That's how he's always been, on every issue, including the economy.

(snip)

In other words, he is the most irresponsible prime minister we have ever had. A prime minister who genuinely endangers our existence. For years, he has acted in utter defiance of Israel's defense doctrine. He hasn't created any deterrence. All his reprisal operations were just to pay lip service, and after each of them, he would boast about how he had hit, destroyed and assassinated, while Sinwar kept laughing and building his arsenal.

Nor has Netanyahu led us to a swift victory. Instead, he has dragged us into a long war of attrition, which means more deaths, more destruction and a severe blow to the economy. Moreover, Israel's defense doctrine includes the need for support from the superpowers, but Netanyahu has managed to pick fights even with the most Zionist American president ever.

It seems to me that not only does Israel not trust its allies (e.g., the United States) and any Arab, Palestinian, etc., but also its citizens who aren't religious fundamentalists. Antagonism towards secular Jews for example. Netanyahu has surrounded himself with fundamentalists who will protect him from prosecution and from losing power. At the cost to the entire country.

Joe is a very good judge of character, he’s been very carefully walking these international diplomacy, tight ropes. But he knows Netanyahu is a bad guy. I don’t see how the population of Israel can keep supporting him, with all his strong man tactics, they still were attacked and massacred horribly.

me, why did we send/or sending Israel a missile defense system and 100 troops? And then the probability of cutting them off for weapons, was this being considered??

We probably sent the troops to make sure the weapons were being used correctly. International alliances are very complicated. And never black-and-white.

I’ve also been very suspicious of the fact that he is so close with Jared Kushner and Family. This would be good for Bob Woodward, or somebody to explore this relationship.

with sending Israel defensive systems like we did. The US troops are only there to man those batteries, and train IDF personnel in using them.

I recently spoke with a friend whose husband is from Israel and has family there. They met many years ago when she went to Israel to work on a kibbutz, as quite a few US Jewish citizens did years ago. He came to the US and they married and live here. But they are worried about family in Israel because they do not feel safe and want to leave. The family has a small business but cannot hire help because many young people are off fighting with the IDF and the Palestinians who used to come from Gaza and work in Israel every day are now dead or not allowed out of Gaza.

I think tourism to Israel has mostly stopped, and it appears that Israel will not be safe for years to come. Netanyahu’s depredations on Gaza and now his wider war on the region are causing him and Israel to lose much of the world’s approval, which cannot be good for Israel’s future. Unfortunately, the MAGA types are in control, and violence seems baked into their psyches.

Israel needs to ditch him asap as it's now perceived as the big bully of the region constantly attacking neighboring countries and the Gaza enclave...with US weapons which ternishes our image more and more.

It's just a horrible reality.

Dump the warmonger. How is he still PM after the poor job he's done? He didn't strengthen the border even after being warned for months that a big attack was coming...and then took hours and hours to deploy the IDF to chase off the Oct 7 terrorists.

What, in the whole country of Israel, there's no one else who can so a better job as PM than the warmonger has?

Before the 2020 election, one of Netanyahu's closest aides, Natan Eshel, was secretly recorded. "Hatred," he said, "is what unites our bloc... They hate everyone... We've managed to drive them crazy with hatred."

It doesn't matter how badly Netanyahu has failed, nor does it matter how much the most despicable man in the history of the Jewish people endangers our lives. The hatred he cultivated has managed to overcome all his failures.
