‘The world cannot wait’: Penny Wong pushes for UN to set timeline on declaration of Palestinian state

Penny Wong has urged the UN to establish a timeline for the declaration of a Palestinian state, urging the Security Council the world “cannot wait” amid the bloody conflict.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong has urged the UN to set a timeline for the international declaration of a Palestinian state, urging nations that the world “cannot wait”.

Addressing the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Ms Wong said it was time for the “cycle of conflict” to be broken amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, reiterating the “frustration” 77 years since the General Assembly adopted a resolution for the establishment of a Jewish and Palestinian state side-by-side.

She also repeated Australia’s call - one jointly held with 152 other countries - for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip amid the heightened state of conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Sudan and the new offensive in Lebanon.

Ms Wong said Lebanon “could not become the next Gaza”

“77 years later, that Palestinian state still does not exist – long held out as the promise at the end of a peace process that has ground to a halt,” Ms Wong told the UN...........

The whole 'They started it!' and picking one side as the Good Guys is fairly pointless and not helpful.

It's why I've posted very little about the I/P confict in the past year or so, because all the oxygen has been sucked out of the room by people who treat it like a team sport, where they get behind their team and it's a two-dimensional battle where their side can do absolutely no wrong...

2. The original UN plan on the establishment of the new state of Israel

way back in 1957 was for a two state solution.

You know, two equal states living side by side with each other, equal respect and trade.

There is nothing wrong with stating that, but instead Israel has become a weaponised state over the last 77 years with the mindset to implement pre-emptive 'defensive' strikes on its neighbours.
Or to put it more simply, 'get them before they get you'.

Fairly pointless for the Australian Ms Wong to push that line, but it is the official line for many countries.
It's far too late for the two state solution to work, but the current alternative - of major forces - USA, Iran - fighting an escalating proxy war in the area needs a solution. Quickly. Yesterday.

5. Do you disagree with Penny Wong that there should be a Palestinian state?

The creation of a state isn't a one go and you're out sort of thing. It gets tiresome seeing some 'supporters' of Israel making the argument that Palestinians missed out.

7. Who's Penny Wong? Who's making the argument that "Palestinians missed out"?

It gets tiresome having to address strawman arguments.

Apologies for assuming you would have. I'm not used to people posting in this forum who don't read OPs of threads they're posting in.

Let me simplify the question for you. Do you support the creation of a Palestinian state?

The OP. states that she's Australia's foreign minister. I don't expect most Americans to care or know who she is, btw.

You appear to have missed the question I asked about whether or not you support the creation of a Palestinian state. That's fine if you don't want to say, but I'm not going to waste time with someone who isn't interested in engaging in a genuine discussion in the conflict.

Have a lovely day

That’s the Biden administration’s official policy on the question and has long been a plank in the Democratic Party platform.

There is only one Democratic politician that I know of who is in favor of a one state solution.

Key words for . . . just ignore the whole thing.

How many countries support the two state solution?
Quite a few, America and Australia included.

The alternative official position of those countries should be, what exactly?

The current situation seems to be that the country with the most bombs and the highest kill count is going to be winning.

14. A negotiated two state solution is a plank in the 2024 Democratic Party platform.

It has long been a Democratic Party policy goal, so no strawmen, please.

There is only one Democratic elected official that I know of who favors a single state solution; your ire is better directed at them.

Like many Democrats who favor a two state solution, I trust the Biden-Harris administration and our Department of State on matters like this, rather than folks who grandstand on an international stage.

It's difficult to take a politician seriously when they want it Now! Now! Now! and are recommending that a tarnished, discredited, and largely inept UN take on the task.

Do the Paelstinains have to do anything? Who's the elected leader exactly? Are Gaza, Judea and Shomron going to be seperate countries? What happens to UNSCR 242 and 338? Just throw them out?
