We are at war, Netanyahu declares after surprise attack on Israel by Hamas
BY GABRIEL GAVIN AND HANS VON DER BURCHARD

3 MINUTES READ
Israel was struck by a surprise attack by Hamas early Saturday morning in one of the most serious escalations in years between Israel and the Islamist militant group. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared the country was at war.
Israel launched retaliatory air strikes on targets in Gaza.
The massive assault by Hamas combined a barrage of rockets fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel and dozens of heavily armed gunmen attacking the countrys south from Gaza. At least 22 Israelis have been killed in the attack with more than 250 wounded, Israels ambulance service said, according to media reports. The toll was expected to rise.
We are at war, and we will win, Netanyahu said in a message to Israelis.

Where were all the troops is what everyone is asking .
Why were they not guarding the borders .
They were all guarding the settlers in the West Bank !!!!
Once things return to normal it is Bibi who will have to answer to the people .

(4,289 posts)Education Minister Yoav Kisch said on Thursday that he as a member of the government shares in the responsibility for the tragic events since Saturday's murderous Hamas attack. Speaking to Ynet Kisch said the families impacted, must be heard. He was the first member of the government to assume responsibility for the events. (Moran Azulay, Sharon Kidon, Nir Cohen)

PM deletes tweet hours later, then apologizes and says he fully backs security chiefs, after Gantz upbraids him: When we are at war, leadership must display responsibility
When this is over we are going to chew him up and spit him out .

(6,891 posts)the next election does not have to be called until October 2026. Will Bibi's coalition last until then? Or will he have to call early elections. IMHO the sooner elections are called the better chances are that he will be defeated.

Poll Finds Right-wing Israelis Trust Military Commanders Over Netanyahu for Wartime Decisions
The poll also reviewed public opinion on a possible release of Palestinian prisoners in return for the release of the Israeli hostages held by Hamas as well as the preferred timing for a public probe into Oct. 7 failures

Its all biblical references and Sodom and Gomorrah !!!!
He and his family are secular .
He is pandering to our religious right wing fanatics and to the American christian evangelists .
He should have resigned already in shame .

Netanyahu, self-styled peerless leader, refuses to accept he presided over catastrophe
The dissonance between the PMs self-image as uniquely capable of protecting Israel, and the worst disaster in our history on his watch has completely shattered his equilibrium

(6,891 posts)Benny Gantz joined the existing cabinet, as part of an emergency wartime extension, but that Bibi's far right wing coalition members were still a part of the 'outer cabinet'. Obviously you would know far more about this than me, so I am glad to be corrected on this.

Dont believe Bibis bullshit that we are one nation united , never have been never will be .
The biggest divide in Israeli society is between the religious and the secular .
Times of war you would think it would stop ......or so Bibi would love you to believe .
So now a personal story .
Everyone is trying to do what they can , absorb refuges from the north or south , donate what they can to those left homeless etc etc etc .
My daughters husband owns a restaurant in Tel Aviv , together with others they decided to cook and feed the reservists because there was not enough infrastructure in place .
Hundreds of volunteers cooking , boxing ,delivering .
One out of every three truckloads per day was stopped and told to turn around because the food wasnt kosher !!!!
The majority of the reservists aren't kosher either

Gaza-area mayor quits Likud on live TV, citing government failures
Tamir Idan of the Sdot Negev Regional Council calls on Likud Central Committee members to also leave the party
A municipal leader in southern Israel resigned from the ruling Likud party on live TV on Wednesday, saying he was doing so over the lack of long-promised governmental assistance for residents of the area.
Tamir Idan is the head of the Sdot Negev Regional Council, which abuts the Gaza Strip and surrounds the town of Netivot and includes 16 small communities such as Alumim, Kfar Maimon, Shuva, Shokeda and more.
Idan made the announcement on Channel 12, calling on other Likud members to do the same.
I announce my resignation from the Likud party, and I place the blame on the Israeli government. I call here on all my friends, members of the Likud Central Committee, to take a similar step, in view of this incredible failure, Idan said, reading from his resignation letter, which he said he would send to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The October 7 surprise cross-border assault by Hamas, which terrorized Gaza-adjacent communities and caught Israeli security forces unprepared, resulted in 1,400 Israeli deaths and some 240 citizens taken hostage. Israel declared war on Hamas the same evening, began a bombing campaign on Hamas and engaged in a massive call-up of reserve IDF forces. Recent days have seen troops enter Gaza and fight against the terror group on the ground.
Locales bordering Gaza and Lebanon, including small cities like Sderot and Kiryat Shemona, have been mostly evacuated, resulting in some 250,000 internally displaced citizens.
The government has been pilloried by evacuees who say that beyond the staggering security failure that led to the attack, it has not done enough to support the devastated communities since, both financially and socially.
During his interview Idan stressed that local government was doing all it could to help residents, many of whom have been evacuated from the area due to Home Front Command directives.
Temporary housing and other necessities had so far been provided from private donations and organizations, he said, but that money was running out, and despite his efforts to speak with numerous government officials and receiving promises of forthcoming aid, direct government assistance had yet to materialize.
Idan said not all residents in his area have been evacuated, but those that remain are living under the shadow of war and rocket fire. The Israeli government just doesnt understand the situation, he said.
Idan had spoken with members of the Likud party, of which he is a long-time member, who had promised that aid would be forthcoming, and said he had been certain that this would happen, but it did not.
Nothing happened, he said, adding that he was finding himself unable to respond to all the personal messages he was receiving from residents asking for help.
The governments intelligence failure in regards to preventing the Hamas assault, the slow response in providing aid and Netanyahus unwillingness to publicly take personal responsibility or blame for the sequence of events have left many Israelis bitter and angry at the government and the prime minister specifically.
Idans resignation comes several weeks into the war, at a time when some voices have begun calling for Netanyahu to resign his position. A recent political firestorm saw the prime minister tweet and then delete a post blaming Israeli intelligence services for the failure to anticipate the Hamas attack.

(12,725 posts)Tell Katie Phang that normally the US would have a top American General in Israel to help out in such a situation.
We dont have one there
guess why?
wait for it
because of the hold on promotions by Tommy Tubberville.
Iran is backing Hammas
Putin backs Iran
Holds on US military promotions
do the math.
toesonthenose
(173 posts)There aren't US troops there to direct or activate. An American General would not have any ability to help bolster the Israeli response.

Hell, I remember the Iranians taking Americans hostage, being in JC at the time and actually very anti-Shah as we had several Iranian fellow students who gave us insight as to how bad it was; but once the revolutionaries took the hostages the attitude of pretty much everyone, including us leftists, changed, and changed MEAN.
