SNAP JUDGMENT:Pink triangle and blue star

Thu, 09 Jun 2016, 02:27 PM
The past month has been a tough one for Israel’s “pinkwashing” critics, who accuse it of exaggerating the country’s degree of LGBT tolerance to supposedly deflect attention away from its policies toward the Palestinians.

In May the first ever “Miss Trans Israel” contest was won by an Israeli Arab who declared, “If I had been in Palestine or any other Arab country, I might have been in prison or murdered.’’ On June 3 Tel Aviv hosted its biggest ever gay pride parade, attracting over 200,000 participants and spectators, initiating a weeklong celebration of LGBT events.

The guests of honor were two top LGBT foreign celebrities, actors Alan Cumming and Lea DeLaria, who defied attacks by boycott activists to attend.

The article makes the case that it is not because of co-misery, but instead it is out of national self-interest in the sense that Israel can't afford to have LGBT people leave or hide or be marginalized because of all those individual and all the LGBT community contributes to society.

LGBT equality is not just the right thing, but also the smart thing.

May Israel be a light unto the nations.

Tel Aviv - is very tolerant of LGBTQ and where it's not as in the ultra orthodox- the rest of the LGBTQ community takes care of its siblings.

among orthodox, Chabad seems to welcome LGBT. I don't know this from first hand experience w/Chabad, and would be curious if this is accurate, but their website discusses this pretty extensively.

http://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/663504/jewish/Do-Homosexuals-Fit-into-the-Jewish-Community.htm

some excerpts:
"We know that ... Torah law expressly forbids the specific act of male homosexuality. And we do know this: Torah law forbids bigotry; homophobia is prohibited. And we do know this: too many Jewish girls and boys, Jewish women and men, have suffered too much for too long. And we know that most of that suffering is caused by the environment around them. We do know this: when we become judges of another person, we behave contrary to Torah law. ... And we do know this: A Jew belongs in a Jewish environment."
