(Declared captured soldier of the DPRK Photo: t.me/the_warshal18)
Ukraine's Special Operations Forces (SOF) probably captured the first North Korean soldier of the war. The prisoner's photo was published in a closed Telegram channel t.me/the_warshal18.
"The SOF group conducted an operation to destroy the enemy in the Kursk direction.
In addition to the successful completion of the task, there were also trophies:
prisoners, including a mercenary from Korea, as well as an armored personnel carrier equipped with anti-cumulative protection."
President Volodomir Zelensky said several North Korean soldiers badly wounded in fighting alongside Russian forces have died after being captured by Ukrainian troops on the battlefield and he accused Moscow of having little regard for their survival.
North Korean soldiers are suffering major losses in Russia's Kursk region, he said. Zelensky also accused Moscow and North Korean enforcers of leaving the soldiers unprotected in battle and even executing fighters to prevent them from being captured alive.
South Koreas National Intelligence Service (NIS) reported that about 1,100 North Korean special forces have been killed or injured in Russia since entering the war against Ukraine.
Capturing a North Korean soldier alive is an intelligence and propaganda victory for Kiev. The EPW will be medically treated and de-briefed by the Ukrainian intelligence services. Kiev will be interested in enemy numbers, morale, locations, leaders, training, and internal problems the North Korean soldiers are facing.

My guess is that the North Korean soldiers may be happy to taken alive by Ukraine.

(5,837 posts)He's got a thousand yard stare several times over.
Being captured will be the highlight of his life.
Side note: The operations manager of a company I worked for in the '80s-'90s was an Italian fighter pilot during WW2. He said that being shot down and taken prisoner was one of the better things that happened to him. Aircraft maintenance wasn't a high priority.

(2,397 posts)The Ukrainian GUR immediately established a PSYOP program when the North Koreans entered the fray. Kiev wants to demoralize the Norks and induce surrenders. This EPW will become a propaganda tool who will broadcast messages to his friends over the radio, internet, and loudspeakers.
Below is a surrender leaflet dropped on the Norks:
