Maduro's electoral council declares him winner of Venezuelan election

CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s electoral council declared the authoritarian socialist the winner of Venezuela’s election Sunday despite independent exit polling that suggested opposition candidate Edmundo González had captured twice as many votes.

The opposition, which sent thousands of ordinary citizens to monitor voting centers across the country Sunday, was expected to challenge the result.

The electoral council said Maduro won with 51 percent of the vote to González’s 44 percent.

The opposition had seen the vote as its best chance in more than a decade to unseat the strongman, whom many here blame for this oil-rich country’s economic collapse and the exodus of millions of citizens, hundreds of thousands of them to the United States.

Want to rule with all their money... ..again.

The opposition gets a lot of support from Trump and the GOP. Remember when Trump met with Juan Guaidó? If Trump is supporting him, you know who the real authoritarian is.

Reflexively have serious concerns whenever a socialist country wins. Especially Venezuela because of their oil and wealth. They want the wealth in the hands of "free" market capitalist, not helping the poor.

Venezuela has seen sweeping and radical shifts in social policy, moving away from the last government's free-market economy and neo liberal reform principles and towards income equality and social welfare programs.

So yeah, most the corporate media have bad mouthed Venezuela ever since the move to socialism. And some Dems can be manipulated into agreeing.

It's hard to research too because there is so much money behind the corporate medias demonization of Venezuela. Most the news only repeat what the opposition says and hates the elected government.

7. Venezuela's capital is eerily calm after vote in which Maduro and opposition both claimed victory

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — An eerie calm enveloped Venezuela’s capital early Monday, a day after the country’s opposition and entrenched incumbent Nicolás Maduro both claimed victory in the presidential election, setting up a high-stakes standoff.

Several foreign governments, including the U.S. and European Union, held off recognizing the results of Sunday’s election, as officials delayed the release of detailed vote tallies after proclaiming Maduro the winner with 51%, to 44% for retired diplomat Edmundo González.

“Venezuelans and the entire world know what happened,” said González. While the opposition vowed it would defend its votes, González and his allies asked supporters to remain calm for now and called on the government to avoid stoking conflict.

Normally bustling western Caracas awoke as if it was a holiday, with several businesses shuttered, bus stops empty and traffic nonexistent. A few hours earlier, around midnight, a mix of anger, tears and loud pot banging greeted the announcement of results by the Maduro-controlled National Electoral Council.

Scary, scary. I don’t believe they can count votes that fast. In the past, Venezuela locked down for 72 hours to count votes and announce winners.
