Yonge St. pedestrian fair: can Toronto’s main drag stage a comeback?

Friday marks the start of “Celebrate Yonge,” a month-long street festival that will widen pedestrian walkways from Queen to Gerrard Sts. and narrow car traffic to two lanes.

Don’t be fooled by the fun-and-games moniker. Celebrate Yonge is a trial run for big change along the city’s spine.

Planners, merchants and city councillors are looking for ways to transform the aging, grimy thoroughfare: they want Yonge St. to be worthy of its status as Toronto’s main drag.

Celebrate Yonge is an “experiment” to see how Yonge St. could better serve the city. “One step at a time,” Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam told the Star in May. .................(more)
