Detroit: DDOT, SMART prepare to resume fare collection after installing COVID-19 safety features





Free bus rides in Detroit and its suburbs are ending soon.

Beginning March 15, the Detroit Department of Transportation and Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation plan to resume fare collections, which were suspended almost one year ago as the coronavirus pandemic took hold.

Now, officials with both transit agencies say they have the measures in place to, once again, collect fares safely. Barriers with clear windows to separate drivers from passengers, a federal mask mandate for riders, along with local efforts to get riders to wear masks, vaccine availability for drivers, regular cleaning and limits on the number of riders are among the reasons officials say fares can be collected safely now.

The fare structure, including various passes, is not changing. Cash will continue to be accepted. ............(more)
