NOAA withdraws speed rule proposal aimed at protecting endangered whale

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) withdrew its previously proposed speed change to certain water vessels aimed at saving the critically endangered right whale population.

The current North Atlantic Right Whale Vessel Strike Reduction Rule requires vessels 65 feet or longer to decrease speed to 10 knots or less within certain areas and times of the year.

The proposed rule change would have included vessels 35 to 65 feet, which would impact a whole lot more boaters and industries.

High-speed vessel strikes are one of the most prominent threats to the right whale population.

.....NOAA Fisheries said they plan to continue efforts to conserve and rebuild the North Atlantic Right Whale population...
