Hong Kong's Hydrogen Revolution: Could This Be the Blueprint for Future Cities?

Hong Kong’s Hydrogen Revolution: Could This Be the Blueprint for Future Cities?

Artur Donimirski | H2Revolution | OCTOBER 22, 2024

In a bold leap towards sustainable energy, Hong Kong is positioning itself to be the first city globally to achieve full hydrogen-powered status. Spearheaded by successful hydrogen trials surpassing initial benchmarks, the metropolis stands at the forefront of the hydrogen energy transition, backed by robust government and business collaborations.

HK Electric’s Strategic Leap into Hydrogen Energy

HK Electric is leading the charge with innovative strategies that integrate hydrogen into its energy generation portfolio. They are breaking ground with cutting-edge, gas-fired generation units at Lamma Power Station, slated for a 2029 launch, purpose-built for eventual hydrogen conversion. With the introduction of their latest power plant, L12, in 2024 boasting an impressive efficiency of over 58%, this shift underscores a significant leap from coal, propelling the city closer to its decarbonization aspirations.

Collaborating with Mitsubishi, HK Electric is pioneering technological innovation at Japan’s Takasago Hydrogen Park, advancing the global hydrogen value chain. These strides place Hong Kong at the pinnacle of the energy transition landscape.

Government-Driven Hydrogen Trials: A Citywide Experimentation

Significant governmental backing has catalyzed multiple hydrogen trial projects across Hong Kong, with nine initiatives greenlit by March 2024. From electricity production to electric vehicle charging stations, these trials are paving paths across diverse economic sectors. Towngas, among the key pioneers, exemplifies the collective drive to integrate hydrogen on a mass scale, with projects underway in partnership with major construction and sports sectors...more

A True Energy Revolution - Ignored by "mainstream" US media - WHY IS THAT? We will find out one day...Meanwhile, wanna buy a drone? A few bombers? Tanks? How many missiles? "Lethal" vs. Beneficial - bring it on.

2. Green Hydrogen is generated by electrolysis using non-CO2 emitting electricity.

For an H2 industry to be helpful in reducing and eliminating CO2 emissions, Green H2 is the only way.

The fossil fuel industry has continued to spread mis-information to block a strong Green H2 industry from developing, but luckily Biden's IRA plan is attempting to assist the build-out we will need to accomplish quickly.

3. That's my question...if it's not "green" hydrogen then it's a waste of time and not helping the environment. nt

...that equipment will be in place and available to use the Green Hydrogen that is not yet being produced due to misinformation and other fossil fuel industry roadblocks.

03/07/2024: China to Build World's Longest Hydrogen Pipeline to Transport Green Hydrogen
https://www.pipeline-journal.net/news/china-build-worlds-longest-hydrogen-pipeline-transport-green-hydrogen

When someone tells you that hydrogen cannot be piped because of embrittlement - don't believe them. They are either lying or ignorant. Maybe both.

US DOE: Gaseous hydrogen can be transported through pipelines much the way natural gas is today. Approximately 1,600 miles of hydrogen pipelines are currently operating in the United States. Owned by merchant hydrogen producers, these pipelines are located where large hydrogen users, such as petroleum refineries and chemical plants, are concentrated such as the Gulf Coast region.

Transporting gaseous hydrogen via existing pipelines is a low-cost option for delivering large volumes of hydrogen

6. The 2024 World Energy Outlook Published Real Data on Just How Dirty and Wasteful the Trivial Hydrogen Industry Is.

The Table A.1.A 2024 World Energy Outlook Can Be Found Here:

World Energy Outlook 2024

Table A.1a: World energy supply Page 296.

This portion table shows the demand for primary energy, which the filthy fuel hydrogen is not. World Energy Demand is 642 Exajoules.

Further down, in the table, which I truncated to make fit into the graphics tools I use, there is this new addition to the table adding, just to make clear, how much energy is wasted making hydrogen so the fossil fuel industry can rebrand fossil fuels as "green."

Here is what it says in the table about the filthy fuel hydrogen, its size and how much energy is wasted to make it for fuel purposes. (It also shows how much energy is wasted processing biofuels.)

The headings are the same as in the full table above with respect to years of data collection as well as IEA soothsaying.

It is now 48 years since theInternational Journal of Hydrogen Energy began publication devoted to this energy shell game in 1976.

It appears that in 2023, nearly fifty years into the campaign to rebrand fossil fuels as "hydrogen" that the 1 EJ of energy that was represented by hydrogen is precisely represented by the amount of energy consumed to make it. The fact that the numbers seem equal is represented almost certainly by a rounding error. The soothsaying for the future shows that "by 2035" the hydrogen industry is predicted to consume twice as much primary energy is it provides. In 2040, when the IEA soothsaying predicts that hydrogen will provide 3 EJ out of a predicted 691 EJ World Energy Demand, it will consume 150% as much energy as it makes available.

One would hope that the soothsaying isn't correct. If, in 2040, we are only producing 45 EJ of World Energy Demand, the planet will be totally fucked.

The fact that the planet is already fucked, hasn't stopped the fossil fuel industry from running this half a century old bullshit advertising campaign to greenwash their products as "hydrogen."

A Giant Climate Lie: When they're selling hydrogen, what they're really selling is fossil fuels.
