Indigenous people in Guatemala await the sentencing of 9 convicted military officers

Guatemala City, Feb 28 (EFE).- Relatives of the seven indigenous people killed by the Guatemalan army in an incident on Oct 4, 2012, await the verdict of the court that will decide the fate of the nine accused soldiers on Wednesday.
“I want justice, my life will never be the same. They left us alone,” said Enrique Faustino García, 54, who lost a leg to a bullet fired by the armed forces while he and other peasants were protesting on a highway against an increase in electricity prices in the western department of Totonicapán.
García, along with five widows of those killed, is awaiting the court’s verdict against the nine soldiers.
Before the hearing that will decide whether the defendants are guilty or not, dozens of family members gathered at the Human Rights Square in front of the Supreme Court of Justice to perform a Mayan ritual asking for justice.
During the trial, several peasants, who were on the stretch of road where the confrontation with the soldiers took place, testified against the soldiers.
