The visit has drawn fire from Republican lawmakers.
It has been confirmed to Axios by a spokesperson for the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) that two CPC leaders made an unannounced trip to Cuba while the House was on recess last week.
Initially reported by the Miami Herald, spokesperson Mia Jacobs stated that Reps. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) and Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), the chair and deputy chair of the CMJacobs said.
Both Jayapal and Omar are public critics of the American economic embargo on Cuba.
Even though US lawmakers occasionally travel to Cuba, those trips are usually open and overt in American and Cuban governments and news.
. . .
Earlier in January, a group of 160 lawyers, mostly American, called on US President Joe Biden to remove Cuba from the so-called "State Sponsors of Terrorism" (SSOT) list.
"Given the tremendous economic, social, humanitarian, and commercial effect placement on the SSOT list has had for the Cuba people, maintaining it for such pretextual reasons continues to be a stain on U.S. foreign policy," the letter considered.

Mystery surrounds a secret trip by Squad members Ilhan Omar and Pramila Japayal to Communist Cuba that coincided with a visit by Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov.
The two leaders of the Democrats progressive caucus sparked fury when details of last week's trip emerged with top Republicans accusing them of a Communist 'pilgrimage.'
The Congresswomen, who are longstanding critics of the US embargo on the Caribbean island, said they were there to 'meet with people from across Cuban civil society.'
But critics slammed their support for a country that 'supports Iran, Russia and Communist China.'
'It's outrageous that Members of Congress would visit a country that jails, abuses, and murders their citizens,' said Rep Nicole Malliotakis, R-NY, herself a daughter of Cuban immigrants.
. . .
'Perhaps their time would be better spent listening to the Cubans crossing our southern border and risking their lives on makeshift rafts to find out why they're fleeing Communism.'

(9,553 posts)Theyve demanded even more restrictions on the US southern border and are looking for ways to cut what little assistance the US gives its southern neighbors even further.
In short, theyve done nothing.
What they HAVE done is try to punish the economies of our southern neighbors and allow the rivers of drug money and guns to flow to the criminals who run the cartels.
I have said time and time again that Im no fan of the Havana regime or of the fools whove run the Venezuelan economy into the ground. That being said, I am forced to acknowledge that visitors property and persons are far safer in Cuba than they are elsewhere in the Latin Caribbean and that the Havana regime has done a far better job of keeping the malign influence of the criminal cartels at bay than their unfortunate neighbors to the west and south.
