Masked men set fire to major market in Mexico, killing nine

10 Jul 2023

A group of masked men have carried out a deadly attack on a market in the central Mexican city of Toluca, discharging their guns before setting the location on fire, according to authorities.

“Nine people lost their lives, eight of them at the site and one more in a hospital,” a statement from the State of Mexico’s prosecutor said.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack on Monday, and a suspect was not immediately named.

The statement added the attack could be linked to business conflicts. Toluca Mayor Raymundo Martinez told the Milenio newspaper that the fire was probably the result of disputes between vendors and owners of premises at the market.

Three of the dead appeared to be under 18, but identifications were still pending, according to prosecutors.

I used to love to vacation in Cozumel and Cabo... I would travel to some (but not all) of the border towns for dental work when I lived 60 miles from the border.

Not any more.

Cabo might be ok but the rest of the nation is not safe for anyone.

And yes, I know, we have so many mass shootings here that the same might be said of us... except no one is kidnapping people here for ransom and the drug gangs, while prevalent, are not running actual state governments here.

Truly heart-breaking is hearing that groups of local citizens have tried to ward off gangs, themselves, since it appears the cops won't or can't help them. Just imagining ordinary citizens believing they have to brace themselves for violence and prepare to battle these gangsters is heart-breaking. So many people must be living in deep fear, day and night any more. What's worse, is they don't really have any way to see this will ever end, either.

It must be like living in hell.

We sanction Cuba but still have no problem with NAFTA. Silence is violence.

Thanks for posting this!

who had to leave the very land their ancestors had been using for generations, all because they couldn't afford to grow corn again once the U.S. taxpayer-subsidized corn flooded Mexican markets at prices far cheaper than the Mexicans could afford to offer, after all their hard work throughout their lifetimes.

U.S. farmers couldn't have afforded to become so wealthy, either, had they not had US Congressmen looking after their interests with taxpayer corn subsidies.

The human element gets lost in there, somehow, on the U.S. side of the commerce, doesn't it?

Can only hope we live long enough to see this pathetic economic war against the Cuban people ended.
