Rescuers work to free dozens trapped on one of world's highest cable car systems

Rescuers in Ecuador are working through the night to free dozens of people trapped in gondolas on one of the world’s highest cable car systems.

Firefighters were alerted around 4 p.m. local time Thursday of a technical failure that affected the Quito Cable Car, with at least 70 people trapped, the Quito municipality said in a statement. They launched a rescue effort in the highlands soon after.

In the early hours of Friday morning, Quito authorities said 17 people had been rescued so far. Ongoing rescue efforts include ambulances and 40 emergency workers including paramedics, high mountain teams, and aerial drone units.

…they just can’t get off the cable car.

Freedom is a state of mind.

No one says “7 billion people trapped on earth and can’t get off.”

It’s just a matter of perspective. You aren’t truly free until you are free wherever you are.

If I took you hostage, transported you to Quito, Ecuador, and told you that you could never leave, you'd feel that you've lost your freedom, and that Quito was your prison.

Once these people are taken out of the gondola, that's exactly where they'll be - in a place you would consider a prison under other circumstances.

Some of them may be residents of Quito who, in fact, might never leave Quito. They are condemned to be prisoners of Quito.

Take this chimp...

Everyone's happy the chimp has been "freed" from the laboratory, and is now fenced into a compound in Florida. Would YOU want to be fenced into a compound in Florida?

The chimp has traded one prison for another, but doesn't realize it.

Same as us.

I say, leave them in the gondola until they free their minds first.

They get to hang free in the air with a beautiful mountainous and urban vista stretching out below them, and nothing to do but to simply take it all in.

And I have to work in front of a computer screen all day.

Who is trapped now, eh?

We should be so lucky.

... The photos almost seem to make it worth a couple of hours of sitting up there. I hope they are freed soon.
