Hillary Clinton
Related: About this forumSanders supporters warn Obama: Don't try to stop Bernie (HRC GP)
Some of the Vermont senator's backers think the president is trying to end the Democratic fight prematurely.Bernie Sanders supporters have some advice for President Barack Obama: Back off.
Thursday morning in the Oval Office, Obama will take his not-so-subtle campaign to ease Sanders out of an active campaign directly to the senator himself. But hell need to be diplomatic.
Even as some top supporters have started backing down since Tuesday night, when Hillary Clinton claimed the Democratic nomination and as a planned Sanders letter to superdelegates campaigning for them to support him rather than Clinton appears in limbo frustration is bubbling among those who want the senator to keep the campaign going.
In their view, the president is trying to prematurely end the fight. They warn that it wont work and that the blowback might show him hes not as popular with the Sanders wing of the Democratic Party as he might like to think.
The president is not Sen. Sanders boss. Weve got to get this straight here, said Nina Turner, a former Ohio state senator whos been traveling the country on behalf of the campaign. Theres respect thats for the commander in chief but Sen. Sanders is duly elected, and hell make his own decisions.
Or else.

They still think they can bully BS into the White House.. Will trump & his fans take up where BS leaves off?
Hillary will have her fill of bullies when she gets Inaugurated as we all have.

Bernie brought them into the process. He is responsible for their behavior. He should tell them to mind their manners in no uncertain terms, IMO.

(3,284 posts)do you remember them coddling Hillary this way at the end of the race? Do you remember if people said that she "just needs time" and "we shouldn't push her"? Do you remember people praising and praising her for what an amazing campaign she ran?
I'm asking seriously, because I don't remember this. I wasn't paying nearly as much attention back then because I was happy with both of them so I just let it play out and then tuned in closer to the general election.

(6,444 posts)I was on HRC's camp but not part of any drama happening. Voted from abroad, first for HRC and then for Obama!
But from what I learned from looking about it, Nope, she wasn't coddled. There was no need because she was and is a card carrying Democrat! Also, since it was HRC she probably was told to buckle up and BE A BIG GIRL!
sarae
(3,284 posts)I don't think anyone has ever coddled Hillary, but then I can't really remember this specific period in 2008. She's always been really good at "manning up" (for lack of a better term) and putting her big girl panties on (HAH), which is part of the reason I like her so much.
Haveadream
(1,630 posts)When the race was extremely close, Senators, party members and the media were telling her to drop out as early as March. The demand was constant. Networks were calling her Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction for continuing, saying she and Obama should go into a room and only he comes out, said someone should take her "behind the barn" (which means an ass whooping) to teach her a lesson, etc. It was extremely hostile. No coddling whatsoever. Bernie has been treated with kid gloves.
sarae
(3,284 posts)I'd totally forgotten about that. They would never say that about BS. Instead, I keep hearing about how he ran a "heroic" campaign and he should be really proud.
It's really disgusting that people were calling for Hillary to drop out a month ago, when she was already winning by a large margin.
Thanks for responding.
Notice how despite a nearly 4 million vote lead, Sander's supporters are still demanding her to be eliminated.
There is a real problem when social media and prime time news commentary use references to violence to describe how a candidate should behave. And that violence extends to supporters and the reporters who write about her favorably. Bernie has not had to cope with any of that. Far from being coddled, Hillary has had to endure not just insults but threats for years. She is extremely tough and handles herself with incredible grace under fire.

This really has gotten a bit tiresome. Standing up for what you believe in is one thing, but the race is over in every measurable way. Any pretense that Sanders is doing what's best for the party went out the window months ago and is only being hammered home by this continued insistence that he'll do whatever he wants.
justiceischeap
(14,040 posts)but in this instance, I think that's the only thing that will satisfy them. Sanders can only threaten the Democratic Party so far left. There are moderate and conservative Democrats within the party and we have to cater to all Democrats and their stances--no matter how much we may not want to do so at times...it's called being a grown-up and being inclusive. These Bernie or Bust people really are misinformed about what they can make the Democratic Party do.
TwilightZone
(28,744 posts)Many of them have no clue that we already have leftist parties in the US. They proclaim Cornel West the best thing ever and have no clue that he's in the Democratic Socialists party or that it even exists. Even though Sanders is himself a member.
Of course, the reason nobody knows that they exist is because they've never gotten enough people together to accomplish anything.

(28,744 posts)The somewhat perplexing thing to me is that they seem to believe that this kind of attitude helps in some way. Acting like an obstinate child is often handled by treating the actor as, well, an obstinate child.

(3,284 posts)I can't imagine pitching a fit because the winner is someone who, you know, actually won. Maybe if I was convinced it was rigged...but with these margins, no one can really think that?! If it had been rigged (which it wasn't!!!), she would've won by a much smaller margin. They're essentially saying, "We're more important than the majority." I guess we just don't count??

(3,626 posts)if the shoe was on the other foot and it was Hillary failing to concede? Never mind graciously congratulating her party's winner, or even acknowledging its historical aspect. I guess he thinks he still has a chance. It's sad, really. I was on the fence for much of the primary cycle because of the principles behind some of Bernie's ideas. But I saw a bullying aspect to his campaign, and I got the impression that there was no willingness to compromise on anything. The last few days have confirmed my instincts. In addition, it's been a long time since I've seen a Democratic spokesperson as unlikable as Nina Turner. Passionate loyalty is one thing, but she is enraged (and has been since well before this latest round of voting.) But you know, it's all so unfair....
Haveadream
(1,630 posts)because their approach is juvenile. A message that says,"We respect President Obama and look forward to his support as Bernie continues his efforts to move this country in the right direction"
or something
But, no.
Their communications are combative, demanding and self referential rather than cooperative and focused on solutions. These are not people who demonstrate diplomacy.

(5,500 posts)Fewer delegates? Fewer votes? Far fewer Superdeligates indicating a preference for Sanders? That's called losing. The members of the Democratic Party have spoken in this Democratic Primary season. At this point "continuing the fight" literally means ignoring the democratic process that we have been following for the last 6 months and installing a candidate at the demands of a minority of voters.

(12,142 posts)What fight? Hillary Clinton won the battle and will formally be declared the Democrat nominee at the party convention. It will be a formality, that is all--she IS already the primary winner.
Anyone who believes otherwise is deluded, and anyone who is posturing themselves otherwise (Bernie) is playing a game of power while he still clutches his list of campaign donors and still is using their ears to keep their attention fixed to him in order to make demands from the Party to feed his ego. The democrats are already working to help people--that's what they/we do, so we do not need Bernie to instruct us in this ongoing endeavor. Bernie needs to feel like a leader, but he did not win the contest--not even close. We are wearing kid gloves and playing games with Bernie because he is demanding it, all the while telling ourselves that it will be over soon. Will it?

(879 posts)Did she literally throw a temper tantrum and say, "you're not the boss of me?"
Which, in addition to being something you send your child to a timeout for, is not even through. There are 3 people you could argue are heads of the Democratic Party:
1) Barack Obama. Democratic President of the United States. Clearly the leader and face of the party.
2) Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. Elected head of the DNC.
3) Hillary Clinton. Democratic Nominee for president.
All 3 of those people have a claim to being Bernie's boss in the Democratic Primary. Which of those 3 would Ms. Turner like Bernie to deal with, cause all 3 of them will tell him the same thing...you ran, you lost. She's right, he's elected, Senator of Vermont. He ran for the presidential nomination and lost. He was not elected anything in the Democratic Primary, so what is she even talking about?
He has as much claim to the Democratic Nomination as Martin O'Malley at this point, and if he didn't want to deal with party politics, and the need to reconcile quickly when the race is done, he should not have fake joined the party to run for President. Of course, if he'd run as an independent, no one would have paid attention to him, he would been marginalized, and disappeared. He's spent the last year using the Democratic Party for personal gain, and it's enough. If he really cares about changing the party, making it more liberal, etc., then get on board and be a team player. If he actually doesn't care about the party, then get out.
