The last time every Democratic US Senator initially sought re-election was in 2002.
Two Democratic Incumbent US Senators up for re-election in 2002 had to be replaced.
Bob Torricelli(D-NJ) - scandal plagued US Senator who was trailing the Republican nominee Doug Forrester in public opinion polls. Torricelli was replaced by the recent retired US Senator Frank Lautenberg.
Paul Wellstone(D-MN)- principled US Senator who died in a plane crash. Wellstone was replaced by Walter Mondale. What lead to Mondale's defeat in 2002, The national wave- Republicans also won the MN Governor's Race in 2002 or The Democrats treating the Wellstone Memorial Service as a political pep rally.
