It runs on my Win-XP box, and my Win10 laptop. I'm using v2.3 (current version).

I'm not sure if this is the "best" one, but it's free with no ads or sudden "expiration".

Hope it helps!

I never heard of this one but grabbed it on your recommendation.
I'm a terrible chess player but enjoy the game. This one is quite nice
and has a lot of options.
Thanks!

You can play against the computer personalities. You can scenarios.
You can play against a real person.
Different clock settings. I find 30 minutes of move time is plenty for me to lose. Haha.
Some of the computer personalities are really dumbed down for learning purposes.

You establish an identity. When playing online against real people all you really know about each other is nationality and ranking.

I just wish I could get out there more.
It does throw a few adds up at you here and there but not while you are playing.
