A gray column will appear on the left.

You will see 'Bookmarks' 'Reading List' 'Shared Links at the top.

Make sure Bookmarks is highlighted when clicked on and you see your list of bookmarks.

Now this is where you have lost the search.

Hover the cursor over the column of bookmarks. Pull scroll down a bit and the search field will come down and appear.

This is more of iOS-like interactivity popping up in OS X.

If it's 10.8 or 10.9, and you have a trackpad, touch two fingers and pull down.

On a Magic Mouse or other mouse with a scroll wheel/ball, just roll up or down with one finger.

When I click on the bookmarks icon on the left side of the tool bar, it then shows all my bookmarks.

On the upper RIGHT side of that screen is the search thingy, at least on my MacBookPro late 2011...

Literally, this:

If the search bar doesn't show, try clicking on the 'Favorites Bar' icon & dragging it up slightly.

When you do this, search appears.

Partial sanity restored.
