Did it work in the past, or is it a new setup?
Does anything else work? Web browsing? phone calls? other?

If it isn't set up you have to go to Settings, then Mail, then Accounts, then Add Account. From there you can set up a gmail or other account. More info here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102619

Check the "pull up" screen -- control center?
Are wi-fi, cellular data, bluetooth on?

I have to remind myself to "don't overthink things" but your DNS might have slipped (some blockers will change it) but that's pretty advanced.

In mail settings, did you accidentally disable your account(s)?

Using mail.app or reading mail via the web browser?
The web browser is actually subject to more settings goofs.
Mail.app has only a few settings, and once they are set, they stick.

Reboot recently? (power down and back up)

I have Verizon unlimited , so I use it for everything . No wifi or internet connection.
So if you exceeded your plan data limit …

Edit: also occasionally I lose my tower connection, so go to settings and switch on ‘airplane mode’
Wait a few minutes and turn it off , it will automatically search and connect to nearest tower.
