Former Australian Labor Party leader Simon Crean dies aged 74 - ABC News (Australia)



Former Labor leader Simon Crean has died suddenly, aged 74, while travelling in Germany.

He was the Member of Parliament for the Melbourne seat of Hotham from 1990 to 2013 and served as a Cabinet Minister in the Hawke, Keating, Rudd and Gillard governments.

Former Labor leader Simon Crean has died suddenly, aged 74, while travelling in Germany.

Former colleagues across politics have paid tribute to Mr Crean as a "giant of the Labor movement", and a man who made Australia a "better, fairer country".

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he will be missed enormously.

"Simon was a great servant of the Labor Party and of the broader labour movement," he said.

"As Labor leader, I benefited from Simon Crean's advice and wisdom. I will greatly miss engaging with him."
