The merger of Seattle University and Cornish College reflects the precarious circumstances pressuring small colleges

across the nation

ince beginning his tenure in July 2021, Seattle University President Eduardo Peñalver had tinkered with — on a few occasions even formally approached — the idea of sharing a handful of services and facilities with crosstown compatriot Cornish College of the Arts to save on operational costs. But the plan never materialized.

Then, in late July, Peñalver received the suggestion from his Chief Financial Officer Chris Malins that they should think bigger and consider a “full-blown merger.”

So, he did.

Peñalver emailed newly appointed interim president Emily Parkhurst, who is also a former publisher of the Puget Sound Business Journal. They met for lunch. And the rest was history.
