Gov. Ferguson signals support for housing bill aimed at essential workers
Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson's honeymoon includes legislation that would help some professionals who work in life, health and safety occupations buy their first homes.
Rep. April Connors reintroduced her "Homes of Heroes," legislation, and on Tuesday House Bill 1022 was mentioned by Ferguson during his Wednesday inaugural address.
"Rep. Connors, I'm excited to work with you to get your 'Homes for Heroes' legislation to my desk." Ferguson said, according to a press release from Connors, a Republican from Kennewick.
The program would offer interest-free loans to help first-time homebuyers in essential professions cover down payments and closing costs. It would be open to workers such as law enforcement officers, firefighters, health care professionals, 911 operators, child care providers and social workers. Veterans and active-duty service members would also be eligible to participate.
