Seattle Police Department fires officer who hit and killed Jaahnavi Kandula
The Seattle Police Department (SPD) officer who hit and killed a 23-year-old woman in January 2023 has been fired, Jason Rantz of KTTH and KIRO Newsradio confirm.
In their reporting, The Stranger and The Seattle Times both referred to an email SPD Interim Chief Sue Rahr sent internally within the department making the announcement.
Officials said Officer Kevin Dave was responding alongside the Seattle Fire Department to a 911 call of a reported overdose nearly two years ago when, while driving at 74 miles per hour, struck Jaahnavi Kandula in the Dexter Avenue and Thomas Street crosswalk, according to an SPD investigation. Investigators confirmed the officers lights were flashing and the siren was being toggled on and off as he approached the intersection.
Last month, Dave agreed to pay a $5,000 fine as part of a penalty tied to hitting Kandula.
