Negotiations over I-90 light rail 'construction challenges' continue, Sound Transit director says

Eleven weeks since opening, the first segment of Sound Transit's 2 Line is carrying up to 6,000 passengers a day, a Sound Transit director told real estate developers on Thursday.

Service on the 14-mile 2 Line, also known as the East Link Extension, initially was scheduled to start this year. But the segment on the I-90 floating bridge wasn't constructed to engineering designs, requiring reconstruction, former Sound Transit CEO Julie Timm said in a March 2023 Business Journal interview.

"The contractor, Kiewit, has taken responsibility for the costs associated with infrastructure that was not constructed to engineering designs and that require repair and reconstruction," Timm said at the time.

She added she was loath to talk about it because the issue might go to litigation.
