I was in Portland that Sunday morning, and saw the mushroom cloud rising in the northeast. Indescribable.

We knew what it was, because the mountain started to spit and fume in March.

First it was "why is he getting in the way of tourism in the area?"

And then it was "why wasn't he more assertive in keeping people out!?"

Imagine the day before:

"People are saying - a lot of people in fact - that this is a great time to visit the St. Helens area. I think a lot of Democrats want you to stay away - and China! - but are we going to let them ruin it for everyone? I don't think so."

And then the day after:

"You hear a lot of people say this: If only Governor Dixie-Lee-whatever had listened to Trump. Why didn't she listen to Trump?"

It is what it is.

We were lucky we instead had a good president, who actually believed in the power of the federal government to help when needed (and not just in making his daughter and son-in-law filthy rich):

the lake rose WAY higher. Scientists believed all aquatic life was lost. Few years later they discovered tiny fish! Somehow nature managed to keep the ecosystem intact. Wow.

The lighting in the black smoke.
In lakewood we could see MSH
Off in the distance.
Everything covered in ash.
I still have a vial.

At a Boy Scout Jamboree. The wind was blowing the other way, so none of us knew about it until helicopters from Fort Lewis started blazing past overhead on the way to the disaster site. Someone in the adjacent campsite heard it on the radio.
