Traffic cameras begin dinging school zone violators in Everett

EVERETT — If you speed on West Casino Road near Horizon Elementary during school hours, you can now expect a ticket in the mail.

The city installed traffic cameras earlier this year and began issuing warnings in April. Now, speeding means a $124 fine.

While lights are flashing near Horizon Elementary, the speed limit is 20 mph, down from 35 mph. The lights will flash from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. and then 3:25 to 4:25 p.m. on normal school days. If schools have a late start or early release, city staff will adjust the times the cameras are active.

A notice of infraction is sent out within two weeks. The camera takes two photos and a 12-second video, which Everett police then review.
