Bill would make fighting at school a felony for kids, parents

OLYMPIA — A bill introduced this week in the state House of Representatives could ramp up the punishment for violence in schools.

Rather than a gross misdemeanor, students or adults who physically fight at schools could be charged with a class C felony under a bill supported by state Rep. Sam Low, R-Lake Stevens.

Rep. April Berg, a Democrat from Mill Creek and a former Everett school board director, said she has concerns about policies that create a “school-to-prison pipeline.”

“I’m not in favor of anything that would increase the potential of having a direct pipeline of our students into the criminal justice arena,” Berg said.

If a bully hits a kid and the kid defends himself, he would go to jail for defending himself along with the bully.
And nothing like putting a kid in an environment where he can learn the art of stealing a car or breaking into a locked building etc.

Anyone wanna bet that the reps supporting this legislation receive cash from the private prison industry?

Criminalizing children... what a disgrace

He says this will help solve the problem of adults beating up on umpires/referees at sports events. This won't solve that problem at all.

Many of those sports events are not held on school property, or during school hours. It also won't do anything about private sport clubs like Little League or soccer. Go back to the drawing board doofus.

No one wants fights in school, but kids do not need a felony on their records at this age.
