Kroger, Albertsons combine for dominant share of Northwest, study shows

In case you’re wondering where Kroger Co. and Albertsons Cos. will likely have to sell stores, you can start with the Northwest.

The two companies in the midst of a $24.6 billion merger hold at least 56.7% combined of the market share in a five-state area in the Northwest, according to a new report from data analytics firm Placer.ai.

Cincinnati-based Kroger (NYSE: KR) and Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons (NYSE: ACI) are by far the two largest grocery companies in the region encompassing Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.

WinCo Foods placed third behind the two behemoths with a strong and rising market share in the Northwest. WinCo, owned by its employees and also based in Boise, has 10.9% of the market share in the five-state region.

2. If the merger is approved I see

a lot of turmoil here in WA. And we've seen a lot in recent years. An Albertsons near us has changed branding 4 times in the last 15 years...Albertsons bought by Supervalu (huge mistake) then to Hagens, back to Albertsons and now Safeway.

I see Winco as the winner, but overall the consumer is going to pay the price for this foolish merger.
