More no-turn-on-red signs installed in downtown Seattle

New right-turn-on-red restrictions are popping up around downtown Seattle intersections in an effort to enhance safety for pedestrians, drivers and cyclists.

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) said drivers are already starting to see more of these signs, as it is two-thirds of the way through installing No Turn on Red signs at 41 intersections downtown. SDOT said 28 locations are complete with the rest wrapping up before July.

This move is part of the SDOT's Vision Zero initiative that aims to end traffic-related deaths and serious injuries on city streets by 2030.

According to the SDOT, right-turn-on-red crashes account for 9% of all collisions with people crossing the street at signals. The SDOT said the locations for the signs were selected along corridors with high pedestrian levels.
