(28,243 posts)No idea about the area, but it looks like an urbanized area that this road leads into.

(18,086 posts)A tremendous amount of foot traffic. Eateries/bars and other businesses catering to students on the right. On the left is the old hospital and medical school. The historic "Grounds" of UVA as well as the Rotunda are in that area.

(4,567 posts)I dont know what the maximum grade is for the trains that use it, but it would involve replacing a lot of track and raising the rail bed way out on both sides of the bridge.
Wiping out a few trucks every month is probably cheaper.
there are several grade crossings and another bridge that would be need to be raised. The right of way is narrow there too. I don't think they could do it with fill dirt.

(106,075 posts)likewise prevents that road from being widened or becoming a four-lane thoroughfare. So, from that POV I benefit because to restructure that overpass trestle would be $$$$$$.

I saw it eat a prefab church steeple in the early 70s from my window.

(43,049 posts)problem raising the bridge. Some times it's an impossible problem.
We had one of those in Elizabeth, leading directly from Port Newark to Rtes 22 and 78. Tons of signs and flashing lights but it got whacked weekly.
