Today is the anniversary of the birthdays of two iconic thought leaders, both of whom were women of color: Audre Lorde and Toni Morrison.
Audre would have been 89 years old today. She was a writer, poet, activist, and educator. Her parents immigrated to the U.S. from the Caribbean and Audre was born in New York City. She served as an inspiration to people all over the world for her commitment to social justice and embracing her identity. On the topic of self-care, she once said Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.
Toni would have been 92 years old today. She was a novelist, a childrens writes, an essayist, and so much more. in 1996, she received the U.S. governments highest honor for achievement in the humanities, the Jefferson Lecture. On Day 1, we shared a quote of hers about freeing ourselves. Today. we share another: All water has a perfect memory and is forever trying to get back to where it was.
We lift up gratitude to them for sharing the gift of their intellect and their passion with the world.
