Letters: Marsha Blackburn should defend her record in a Senate debate vs. Gloria Johnson
Hold a Senate debate for the sake of the public
Re: Marsha Blackburn won't debate Gloria Johnson, despite benefits for Tennessee voters, by David Plazas, The Tennessean, Sept. 16 (digital) and Sept. 22 (print).
I'll get right to it:
* U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn hasnt held a town hall in over seven years and only appears in friendly venues, excluding the public from attending.
* If shes able, Marsha should have the opportunity to defend her voting record on air.
* As a news outlet, you have a responsibility to inform the public. Its clear that Marsha avoids debates because many voters in this state tend to support candidates solely based on party affiliation. This lack of accountability allows her to maintain the illusion that shes serving her constituents without facing any challenges.
* Debates provide an opportunity for candidates to inform voters on their positions.
Debates often attract significant media coverage, amplifying candidates messages and reaching a broader audience. Something that is seriously lacking in this state.
