Chancellor rules that gun control referendum can go on Memphis ballot

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Shelby County Chancellor Melanie Taylor Jefferson ruled that Memphis' gun control referendum can go on the Memphis ballot.

Two weeks ago, the City Council filed a lawsuit against the election commission to remove the November referendum.

Twenty years later, the story is repeating itself: the state has said they would not approve a ballot with the gun control questions on it, the election commission said they would not put the questions on the ballot, and the city has filed suit.

Governor Bill Lee, a Republican, said the City Council cannot override the state government. Lee added that the city fighting with the state government is the last thing anyone needs.
