Unity Rally Draws Hundreds Of People From Across Upstate
Posted: Jul 26, 2014 11:21 PM EDT

GREENVILLE, S.C. -

Around 400 people came to the first Unity Rally Against Hatred Saturday at the Hughes Main Library in Greenville.
The event was organized to address the motives of the Ku Klux Klan.
Some residents in Oconee County found an invitation from the Ku Klux Klan last week.
The flyer read “Save Our Land, Join The Klan” and came in a bag with candy.

The KKK has a long history in South Carolina that dates back to the 1860s, according to Courtney Tollison Hartness, Associate Professor of History at Furman University.
While the KKK has evolved over the years, their ideals have not changed nor the effect they can have on a community.
“It reminds people that they don't want to repeat history. They don't want to go back,” says Lecia Brooks with the Southern Poverty Law Center.
