South Carolina bill sparks debate over making school board elections partisan

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — A State House bill has caused debate over whether school boards in South Carolina should be partisan.

The proposed, Freedom Caucus-backed measure would require candidates to run as Republicans or Democrats in partisan primary and regular elections.

The bill has been referred to the Judiciary Committee before it moves further in the State House.

As a Charleston County School District (CCSD) Board of Trustee member, Carolina Jewett said most of her job is looking at the district’s budget and policies, things she argues aren’t partisan.
