Spartanburg Democratic Party chair Angela Geter launches bid for U.S. Senate
Angela Geter, chairwoman of the Spartanburg County Democratic Party, launched her 2022 candidacy to challenge the U.S. Senate seat of Tim Scott.
Scott, a Republican from Hanahan in Berkeley County, won the 2014 special election to serve the remainder of Republican Sen. Jim DeMints term and was re-elected to a full six-year term in 2016. Scott's term ends Jan. 3, 2023.
Geter formally announced her bid at an event Thursday at Victor Memorial Veterans Park in Greer. She was joined by Trav Robertson, chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party.
Her announcement before a small crowd of about 15 to 20 people lasted roughly 15 minutes.
"My campaign will focus on economic development, infrastructure and education," she said. "I'm young enough for today's issues. I'm old enough to distinguish between fact and fiction. And humble enough to know when I am uncertain about that distinction and take steps to make it clear.
