PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) has confirmed the presence of bird flu in a noncommercial farm flock in southern Washington County.
On Friday, members of the DEMs Division of Agriculture and Forest Managements Animal Health Unit humanely euthanized a flock of around 40 birds infected with the H5N1 strain of avian influenza.
Over the last month, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said more than 10 million birds in commercial and backyard flocks have been hit by the H5 bird flu.
The current strain of bird flu has only been detected twice in Rhode Island, with the first being in a backyard flock in October 2022 and the other in a fox kit in May 2023. The state has not yet had a positive commercial bird case.

the G.O.P. will be frantically trying to hide these stories from here on out. They want to keep us in THE DARK.
But this bird flu epidemic is spreading - metastasizing.

(26,000 posts)A nurse convinced me to get the flu shot which was supposed to work against the bird flu but If I remember right that shot caused more problems than it cured.
In 1971 the bird flu scare was way overblown in the US but what is happening now is much worse than what happened in 1971. There doesn't seem to be much urgency about today's bird flu with Fuck Face as president. We will never know how bad it is, information will be shut down.
Did you know you can get bird flu from contaminated milk just splashing on your face?

(68 posts)My understanding is that the standard pasteurization process for milk destroys the bird flu virus. Does anyone have more current medical or scientific information?
