State board issues warning to Warwick mayor over car business

CRANSTON — Warwick Mayor Joseph J. Solomon was disciplined by a regulatory board that he sits on, receiving a warning on Wednesday for “discrepancies” related to his car sales business.

The action by the Motor Vehicle Dealers License and Hearing Board came on the heels of a probe by two investigators who looked into the possibility that Solomon’s business, Legal Motors Ltd. on West Shore Road, wasn’t properly occupied. Their findings were discussed at a public hearing on Wednesday.

The back and forth with the board created a bit of a spectacle: a mayor of Rhode Island’s second largest city appearing with his lawyer to resolve questions about his car sales business.

Question came from a board that Solomon continued to serve on Wednesday — despite a recent request from the office of Gov. Gina Raimondo’s for his resignation.
