Luzerne County Council to consider election safety resolution that discourages the use of ballot drop boxes

Two weeks after it rejected a proposed election worker protection ordinance, Luzerne County Council will consider a proposed election safety resolution on Tuesday.

The resolution, proposed by council Vice Chairman Brian Thornton, discourages the use of ballot drop boxes "because of safety and security concerns associated with them."

Thornton said Sunday that he patterned his proposed resolution after the ordinance proposed by Councilwoman Joanna Bryn Smith that council rejected on Oct. 8.

Thornton was among seven Republican council members who voted against the ordinance, which would have made it an offense punishable by a fine or up to 90 days in jail to intimidate, threaten or harass election officials or poll workers.
