Luzerne County manager agrees to put out ballot drop boxes, but lawsuit may continue
Luzerne County voters will have access to mail-in ballot drop boxes before the upcoming election after all. The reversal of a previous decision not to deploy them came after the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania filed a lawsuit against the Luzerne County Board of Elections and Luzerne County Manager Romilda Crocamo.
The lawsuit, however, may still continue.
A complaint was filed in Luzerne County last week after Crocamo announced that she would not deploy the countys four drop boxes before the upcoming election, citing security concerns. The ACLU alleged in its complaint that the county had used drop boxes in every election since 2022, and that Crocamo did not have the authority to unilaterally decide against their use.
A Monday morning hearing on the ACLUs request for an injunction effectively asking the court to require the County to put out drop boxes was canceled.
But according to a spokesperson for the ACLU, the case may continue regardless. The ACLU says the court still needs to answer the question of whether Crocamo had the authority to pull the drop boxes in the first place, which they allege was done without action by the county board of elections.
