The familiar click-clack sound of the flipping sign at Amtraks 30th Street Station could soon vanish.
The future of the iconic sign, part of the Philadelphia railroad station since the 1970s, is up in the air. In November, Billy Penn reported that Amtrak had plans to take the sign down in January 2019. The Solari board, named after its Italian manufacturer, was going to be replaced with digital screens.
But the company was hit by pushback when the news hit that the board may be taken down. Congressman Brendan Boyle reached out to Amtrak CEO Richard Anderson to advocate for keeping it.
Im in the middle of negotiating-slash-fighting with Amtrak now trying to satisfy their demand that the entire system of updating passengers in real-time happens, while at the same time doing that in a way that preserves the sign, Boyle told PA Post.
Philadelphias Solari board is the last of its kind in operation at Amtrak stations in the United States. New Yorks Penn Station took its own board down in 2017.

(3,611 posts)but very dated. The article says it runs on Windows 95. Sign was slated to go to the PA Railroad Museum so it's not like it will be gone forever. I'm sure the replacement could be made to mimic the appearance and sound of the old machine (but probably at some wildly expensive cost). It was government regulation that cause the signs to be replaced anyway, and it's the government itself that's fighting to keep them there.

The government should not be passing laws over such trivia as signs in railroad stations.
