Father Rother's step toward sainthood inspiring to Oklahomans

Greatness comes from the most unlikely and humblest of places.

That continues to be one of the lessons I learn from the story of the Rev. Stanley Rother. That he grew up Catholic in an Oklahoma small town - son of an Okarche farmer - is another aspect drawing me to his experience.

On Tuesday, Father Rother became another step closer to becoming a saint. This should be a source of inspiration and pride among all Americans, not just Catholics.

If beatified (the final step before sainthood), Rother would become the first Catholic martyr from the United States and the first U.S.-born priest to receive such recognition.

Father Rother was killed in Guatemala in 1981.
